One island, several front doors

Calivigny’s Beach Cottages are a trio. The operator describes three two-bedroom cottages, each with a kitchen, within an island accommodation offer that also includes the Beach House and Overhang House. Several domestic addresses sit inside a single reservation: Calivigny is offered for exclusive rental to one group at a time. The reservation is singular; the domestic arrangement is plural. That arrangement gives privacy an internal life. A private island can exclude other guest parties from the accommodation proposition, but the invited group still contains different relationships. A family is also couples, siblings and smaller households; a gathering of friends contains friendships that do not all run at the same intensity. Calling everybody one party is useful for a reservation. As a description of their social world, it is incomplete.

The Beach House supplies a possible centre. The operator presents it as the island’s heart for entertaining and describes a rotunda opening onto a marble terrace and pool, with an outdoor kitchen among its facilities. The other residences give that centre alternatives. Overhang House has its own terraces, freshwater pool and direct beach access, according to the operator. The cottages repeat the kitchen at a more intimate scale. A kitchen specification does not establish a self-catering arrangement; its significance here is that the idea of home is distributed across the island’s accommodation. There is a social difference between being allocated a bedroom and being given an address. A bedroom makes retreat part of the same interior; another house makes joining the gathering more explicit. Between the rotunda and the cottage kitchens, affection can take forms other than continuous proximity. Leaving the Beach House for a cottage can belong to the shared stay without becoming a withdrawal from the people who made it. The buildings provide the possibility; the group decides whether to use it.

Calivigny can be reserved as one destination while remaining several places to come home to. The cottages matter to the Beach House precisely because they make it possible to be elsewhere. Company acquires a little more meaning when entering the room is a choice.
